Super Mario hit the arcade scene in 1985, debuting on the NES – Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES was one of the premiere game consoles of the time. When first released, Mario had to save Princess Toadstool of the Mushroom Kingdom. King Bowser Koopa was the bad guy. He was the leader of the Koopa Troop which invades and captures the very peaceful Mushroom Kingdom. Casting an evil spell, King Koopa changes its inhabitants in blocks, weeds and other weird and strange objects. Princess Toadstool is the only person who can undo the spell and she has been captured and taken prisoner. Super Mario must come to the rescue. Mario had to conquer 8 levels, called worlds, of the Mushroom Kingdom. Each world has a castle lived in by one of King Koopa’s minions. Super Mario has to fight through each one defeating the bad guy along the way. The final fight takes place in the eighth castle and is between Mario and King Koopa. Super Mario defeats the king and rescues Princess Toadstool from her prison. She then undoes the spell and everyone lives happily ever after – but wait. Maybe it isn’t quite the ever after happy ending. |
