The Super Mario film, barely following the premise of the game was a box office flop. Nonetheless, it garnered a cult following for the being the very first live-action film based on a video game. Take that movie buffs. With a much darker tone that the games, the film influenced later games in ways such a giving Princess Daisy a larger role. In the film also, Luigi develops quite the romance with Princess Daisy. Like the games, the Super Mario film revolves around a kidnapping and all the mayhem that occurs in trying to rescue the kidnapped Daisy. Got to warn you though, if you have not seen the movie, there are plot spoilers ahead. After being knocked out by two oddball characters name Iggy and Spike, Mario and Luigi head deep into some caves following Daisy’s screams. Whoa – suddenly they find themselves in a weird parallel world. Living there are a human-like race that came from dinosaurs. The story revolves around a rock – a piece of meteorite that Daisy has – that can merge the parallel universe with the real world. King Koopa (remember him from the games) wants the rock so he can rule both worlds. It turns out that Daisy is actually the princess of the other dimension. Everyone believes that only Daisy can merge the two worlds. Oh how wrong they are. The climax of the film occurs when the two worlds do merge. Mario and Luigi do battle with Koopa eventually turning him into slime effectively killing him. Super Mario and Luigi return to New York but Daisy is unable to go with them. Sadly, Daisy, Yoshi and Toad watch them go. But the story doesn’t end there. Three weeks later, Daisy needs Mario’s and Luigi’s help again thus setting the stage for a sequel to the movie that never happens. |
