Mario and Luigi - seems they have been around forever. And the mario games have become increasingly popular over the past 20 years, this trend is going nowhere! That short pudgy plumber of guy and his brother Luigi. Mario first appeared in an arcade game named Donkey Kong in 1981. And originally he was a short pudgy carpenter called Jumpman. Interestingly, the name was changed to Mario after a big argument between the Nintendo employees and their landlord who was actually named Mario.

The Super Mario Bros original color scheme was deliberate in that the arcade hardware of the time was very limited. The colors contrasted with each other, making Mario and Luigi easy to see as they roamed around his world. Even Mario's hat was made to make it easier by not having to draw any hair. And with a moustache, the artists could avoid drawing a mouth and facial expressions at the original size of the character. Even though Mario barely changed through the years, there are some changes that were added to his character. For example adding a big red M to his hat and gold buttons to his overalls.

Initially, Super Mario was simply going to appear in different games in a cameo role. That soon changed and Mario and later Super Mario Bros became big stars in their own right. Fighting and defeating the nasty creatures that emerge from the sewers beneath New York brought stardom.

What started as Mario soon became Mario Bros with the introduction of Mario's brother Luigi. And fairly soon after, the Super Mario Games entered the arcade scene.

It features a very simple setup in which the player (you) plays a seemingly endless game. The bad guys come from the pipes on the top and head on down to the playing level. Once there, they can return to the top only to go through the whole cycle again. At each stage, you goal is the same - defeat the enemies. Future iterations of the game became more complicated but the premise remained the same, namely to get the bad guys.
